Expect it and get it!
Ever heard the quote “Thoughts Become Things?”
It’s a TUTism (and if you’re not getting TUT notes you really should!) and what it means is that the things we think about, day in and day out are the things we’ll eventually experience in our lives.
If you don’t believe this is true then I challenge you to pay attention for just one day and see how many things happen exactly as you expect them to. I bet you’ll be surprised at just how much of life plays out just how you assume it will. Which is a good thing…after all while some surprise is good, too much can just be chaotic.
Once you realize this is true though, it just begs the question, “can I change outcomes by changing my expectation?”
In my experience, YES YOU CAN! I do it all the time and it makes my life infinitely easier. Here are some simple examples of “expecting on purpose” and how it plays out in my life:
| EXPECTATION | HOW IT PLAYS OUT |
| Get a primo parking spot in a crowded lot | Car pulls out of the first slot right in front of me and I buzz in |
| Get somewhere on time (even though I left late and its rush hour) | Traffic is mysteriously light today, I hit every green light AND the person I’m meeting is running late so I have to wait when I get there! |
| Get a book or cd I’ve been wanting | See it on sale at the store for half off -or- someone gives it to me as a gift |
| Chinese food | My kid brings home leftovers from – you guessed it – a Chinese restaurant and gives them to me. |
| A clean living room | I get home from an appointment to find that same wonderful kid has gone on a cleaning spree…without me even asking! |
It would be cool enough if expectations just worked for those little things…sure makes the day go smoother! But get this…they also work for the much bigger things. I’ve gotten 3 FREE cars by expecting them (no I didn’t go around begging…just decided to expect them and they appeared) and once I got $2,000 I was expecting from a completely unexpected source!!
Over the next couple weeks we’ll talk more about expectations and how to start making them work better in your life.
For right now pay attention to what experiences you’re having, and begin to connect the dots with your expectations around them.

Wow, this is great! I love your insights and clear explanation. It seems though, a tough thing because the subconscious is so hell bent on bringing me whatever has been in there all these years. Does consciously changing our expectation really change the subconscious?

Hi Lucy,
Consciously changing your expectation can change your subconscious… sometimes. It actually depends less on how long you’ve held a certain expectation than it does on how strong that expectation is.
The key is the emotion that is attached to that perception. Even a life long belief can easily be changed if there’s not a lot of emotion attached to it. Conversely, a one time event with a lot of emotion can completely change your life.
For most of us, it’s many years of reinforcing thoughts and experiences coupled with emotion that anchors those perceptions and makes them so stubborn.
Make sense?

That does make sense. Thanks. But it also scares me a little bit. Because so many years have been so dark and sad and depressing. I just wonder if it’s possible to change those deep seated beliefs and smooth out those ruts in this lifetime! One thing is very clear to me. I can see exactly how I got where I got from the emotional turmoil I kept myself in. It’s clear as day when I look back. I never have to wonder how I got here because it’s obvious. I only have to keep focused on the thought/emotion/belief I have today to get out of that rut. And maybe staying in a state of joy and blessing what I did go through to get here might be one of the ways of getting out. Maybe??
Thanks for all your help!

Yes that’s one of the ways of getting out. Another way is to not see yourself in a hole at all but just at point A of a journey where your goal is point B.
B is simply different than A… not better or worse. I think people often get stuck in this place of “better or worse” and somehow feel inadequate because they’re in this place they’ve labeled as bad.
Also remember that on the way there will be other bumps, ruts and distractions. Some of those may seem very similar to being at point A, but in reality they’re not.
A good analogy is that of driving through the great plains in the US. For miles and miles it all looks the same…. field after field after field. If you didn’t know better you might think you’d been driving on a treadmill and not making progress at all. But you are and you can look for small differences in the scenery that let you know you’re not in the same place. Then eventually the terrain changes and have confirmation that yes, you are making progress!
